Welcoming remarks by the Rector
Dear colleagues, dear friends,
It is my great honor and pleasure to invite you to the Scientific Conference “The Role and Significance of Serb Sarajevo in the Creation of Republic of Srpska”, organized by the University of East Sarajevo under the auspices of the City of East Sarajevo. The scientific meeting will be held on September 15 and 16, 2022 in East Sarajevo.
The goal of the scientific gathering is to shed light on the political, cultural, scientific and educational significance of Serbs in Sarajevo through the centuries, and especially the role and importance of Serb Sarajevo in creating Republic of Srpska, the University of East Sarajevo and other important topics.
There are few higher education institutions in this area that can boast of 140 years of education and 30 years of work in Republic of Srpska. The University of East Sarajevo inherits the tradition of one of the first higher education institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Serb Orthodox Theological Seminary in Sarajevo, which was founded in 1882 as the first Serb high school in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The seminary in Sarajevo is the nucleus of the University of East Sarajevo.
The University of East Sarajevo, called the University of Sarajevo of Republic of Srpska, was established on September 14, 1992 by a decision of the National Assembly of Republic of Srpska. At the same session, the National Assembly of Republic of Srpska adopted the recommendation of the Government to take into account the dispersion of faculties when deciding on the network of higher education institutions, not to be located in one center, but to be established in other towns in the eastern part of Republic of Srpska where war conditions allowed. This is the model according to which the University of East Sarajevo is still organized today, which members are located in ten towns in the eastern part of Republic of Srpska, from Trebinje to Doboj.
Considering the time in which Republic of Srpska was created and in which the work of the University of East Sarajevo took place, as well as the results achieved in the field of education, science and art, we can rightly say that we have succeeded.
It is clear that the University of East Sarajevo is an institution of national importance that can boast of its own tradition. We are sure that the results achieved by Republic of Srpska and the University of East Sarajevo for these 30 years are a guarantee of longevity where the quality of life of all citizens, development and prosperity of Republic of Srpska and the University of East Sarajevo will be criteria for an even brighter future.
We are proud to belong to Republic of Srpska and the University of East Sarajevo and are committed to the sacred goal, quality education and scientific research and artistic work that are the guarantor of progress and development of Republic of Srpska and the University of East Sarajevo.
